KCS “Safety Starts Here” Unit in BC

“Safety Starts Here”   “La Seguridad Comienza Qui”

KCS 4859 decorated with a "Safety Starts Here" message in Spanish on the conductor’s side and English on the engineer’s side was surprisingly on the point of CPKC train 301 from Calgary to Vancouver on Feb 10. Not many KCS units have been used on the point way out west here so it was a big surprise to find this special painted unit heading for the west coast. A days chase was in order. The first part of the chase was on the CPKC Shuswap Sub and after Kamloops, was on the CPKC Thompson and CN Ashcroft Subs. Here's a selection of pictures of my 16 hour marathon to see this unit in daylight in BC.

1. Curving along the South Thompson River under Hoffman’s Bluff between Chase and Watmore.

2. Arriving at Geddis (east of Kamloops) to set out the UP 6545. Geddis is used by CP to set out and pick up extra units needed for the mountains east of here. There is often a collection of interesting power on hand. BC Rail 4652 is rare on CP this far east.

3. On the move again westbound having crossed from the north to south track at Ducks. Only this solo unit up front and AC4400W CP 9764 on the rear are needed to power this train the rest of the way to the west coast.

7. At Tunkwa, in the town of Savona, the sun made a brief appearance with the train now on the Thompson Sub

8. Leaving Savona. Kamloops Lake and the CN mainline at Jaleslie in the background.

9. Approaching Ashcroft, now in the Thompson River Canyon, with CN train X311 doing station work on the other side.

10. Twisting through the canyon approaching Martel with the train now on the CN Ashcroft Sub.

11. Departing Martel with 114 cars of grain snaking through the canyon.

12. Emerging from the tunnel and rock sheds at Skunka, between Spence’s Bridge and Martel, as the light was fading and the chase came to an end.

With it running in Canada now will it go from being bilingual (English, Spanish) to trilingual (English, French, Spanish)?

"La sécurité commence ici" -- not too different from the Spanish.
