Fairview Roundhouse (Halifax, NS)
Author: cn6218

By April 13, 1996 the Fairview Roundhouse had been demolished, with only one track remaining on the left, with a pit and raised servicing areas.  The machine shop (2-story brick building on left), storage for Bridges and Buildings and offices for the car shop remained, although they would be destroyed in a fire about 3 years ago.  There was still a good variety of power though, even though none of VIA's passenger power was serviced here any longer.  Straight ahead is an MLW M-420W, with GP40-2L 9491 to its right.  Farther over is an MLW S-13u switcher, and then wheel storage for the car shop.

Today most of the car shop tracks are out of service, with carmen changing wheelsets and doing other repairs at the intermodal and container piers.  There is one track farther over that receives grain for the Olands Brewery in the north end of Halifax, and the turntable itself does still exist and is serviceable, although I'm told it can be temperamental.  But with no other way to turn equipment this side of Truro, it will probably last a few more years.
