Freight Car Friday - CP Flat & Large Load at Aldersyde, AB
Author: feclark

Just over a week ago I posted a load on CP flat 315229, at https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?15,5835315. Continuing the theme that the load makes the flat car, in terms of interest, here's CP 315223 from June 29, 2001. The location is Aldersyde, AB on CP's Aldersyde Sub, between Calgary and Lethbridge. Looking on Google Satellite, this is probably the siding at Mullen Trucking Corp. I don't know what the load is, but I figure if I rotate it 90 degrees, maybe those lugs at one end are where a boom/dragline gantry pivots. Any ideas?

Nice pictures!

The load is the main revolving frame piece of a large rope mining shovel.

Are you sure its the slewing frame from a cable shovel? Their is no support bearing mount for the slewing gear.

That would be on the other side, not pictured. Those lugs are definitely where the lower ends of the arms tie into the main base.

Yes Sir!  That is the upper rev, center section of a rope shovel.
It's either from an old style Bucyrus Erie, or a Marion shovel.

The large hole just to the front of center is the hole the center pin goes through.
The four smaller holes to the front and rear are for the swing pinions.
The two small lugs on the rear of the frame are for the rear gantry legs.
At the front, the large outer lugs are for the boom foot pins, and the smaller lugs on the rear of the boom foot lugs, just to the middle are the front gantry legs.

The roller path you referenced is on the bottom, which is the side we can't see.  We are looking at the top of the rev frame.
Not trying to get too specific, but this is actually what I do for a living.

Not too specific at all; thanks for contributing from your expertise.

My past experience comes from working as a mechanic and oiler in an underground hard rock mine for over 2 decades.
I am very familiar with track drive Lieberr and P+H shovels.
