Seems dumb to stop in the middle of a city with a flaming load.  Did they do it because where they stopped was more accessible than anywhere else in the area?

London ON CA is pretty much built up. It doesn't look like they had much choice. The spot looks like it is right next to where CP's station was.

The area is a lot different than it was when I visited in the 1950s - 1970s.

Indeed, it is just two blocks east of the former station (for several years it was a Keg Restaurant; it was empty when I last saw it) at Richmond Street.

There's a Yahoo article with a video of the train moving through town.

Can't seem to find it again, pretty spectacular.

Yep! A lot of through truss bridges west of where the train stopped which a road runs alongside, The train could not have stopped there.

That video is the second one in the linked to news story.
