Wafer Logo Wednesday - CN Ohio Crane With an Old School Feel
Author: feclark

On June 20, 2001, a friend and I were shooting in the Red Deer area, and ran across a small yard at CN Burbank. It's just south of Highway 597, and east of Red Deer Junction.
1. We were pleased to find a crane not in black, and also bearing a version of the wafer herald. It seemed a nice retro touch. This is CN 50435, a 40t OHIO DE 400 built in 6-73 according to the TSG. It's accompanied by flat CN 58253.
2. A close-up of the logo; it looked very sharp. Does anyone know if it was delivered this way (we were firmly in noodle era by then), or did some shop decide to honour the past a bit? Cheers and thanks.
Fred

CN 50435 is an Ohio model DE 400 locomotive crane, serial number 4941, built in 1973. It was shipped new from the factory to CN in Montreal, QC on June 21, 1973. It was originally an all black crane (car body and rotating deck) with red counterweight. CN's Mountain Region Work Equipment painted the crane upper yellow and added their version of the CNR maple leaf logo to a number of cranes and other large Work Equipment machines.

This is great, thanks! I was surprised to see your response flagged in my inbox, it was a while since I posted. I notice the logo you posted varies a bit in terms of the leaf's outline.

I just joined Trainorders.com yesterday and am scouring the site to add information to some of the MoW Work Equipment pics.
I spent 49 years in the railway industry in Canada, with 47 of them in the Engineering Work Equipment field.
The Maple Leaf logo I scanned and posted is actually a small 3"X3" decal used on hard hats, and some small machines. It does have better detail than the hand painted logo on the side of the crane.

It's great to have you on board. I took a quick look at some of your Flickr postings. You have been able to get into some places during your career!

Thanks. Would appreciate seeing any other old CN, CP, ONR, and other Canadian Work Equipment photos you might have.😁
