Canadian Railroads > Two Train Day on the Bedford Sub

CN has been running just one train a day into and out of Halifax as much as possible over the last 10 years, so it's a special occasion when a second gets scheduled.  Such was the case on Wednesday last week, when a 998 TEST train followed Z120 down from Moncton.  998 wasn't much of a train, only a GP38-2W and converted RDC, but we'll take what we're given here.

Just after 10 am Z120 was rounding the big curve at Moirs Mills in Bedford and nearing mile 9 of the Bedford Sub.  The three ES44ACs up front featured 3912 leading, the last of that model received new by CN in late 2019.  Following it were 2803, one of the first from 2012, and 2793, an ex-CREX leaser built in 2015.

Two hours later, 998 finally showed.  They were closer behind leaving Moncton, but I think they were testing sidings on the way down, and may have had a bad meet with 507 as well.  They are on the main line between mile 8 and 7 of the Bedford Sub.  In the going-away shot, the rear end of 120 can be seen, still on the transfer track, with the head-end probably stopped at the yard office in Pace Yard., about a mile and a half ahead.

And yet when it returned as O999, the 1501 ran solo. Or at least it was when it later tested the Sussex sub.

I wondered why it had an engine on it; down here in the US it usually operates solo.  Makes a neat consist though!
