Canadian Railroads > MLW MondayDate: 09/02/24 03:01 MLW Monday Author: hoggerdoug Scan of some dusty prints, PGE 628 and PGE 576 at Chetwynd BC, perhaps late September 1973. Train was most likely a Fort Saint John turn. I had not had the camera very long and the upgrade from Kodak Instamatic to a 35 mm was quite a leap of technology for me. Slide film was not always available in the local stores in Chetwynd and the picture prints had a heavy matte finish. I tried various scanning options and it will be a miracle if I find the original film negatives to scan.
My sincere apology if these images are a repost.... Doug Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/02/24 15:11 by hoggerdoug. Date: 09/02/24 09:28 Re: MLW Monday Author: TCnR That's pretty rare stuff for TrainOrders, the kinda stuff that books were made of.
Lots to see, thanks for the efforts. Date: 09/02/24 22:46 Re: MLW Monday Author: BoostedFridge Nice shots from a time without a lot of good, colour images.
The interlacing noise effect on the print scans is just the kind of thing that some newer noise reduction software is good at removing. I was curious, and ran your second image through Topaz. Below is the result with some tweaking. If you would prefer I can delete the image below though. Date: 09/03/24 01:34 Re: MLW Monday Author: RogersPass Hi Doug, So what are these two Locos as they are not what I have seen before.
One looks like an RS 18 and reading another post I think it could be a RS 18 also but newer some thing. Thanks for posting these and They are great locos back in there time. BTW Doug Thanks for telling me how the switchers and Lights work on the Hills. I have been a bit slack of last because the weather been shitty and We have done some painting ETC.. Cheers Brian in New Zealand.. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 09/03/24 02:12 by RogersPass. Date: 09/03/24 02:05 Re: MLW Monday Author: hoggerdoug Your tweaking of the image is really good. I have seen good comments regarding the Topaz software. My older computer is limited what can be used for photo editing. Okay by me to leave your image as posted, good comparison of software etc.

There's some detailed info in some TO posts and on the internet, here's a wikipedia with some base info:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MLW_RS-18 It appears that PGE / BCR followed CN locomotive concepts for quite a while, which would make sense given the location of facilities at Prince George and not much exposure to the CP at Vancouver. There's also the sheer horsepower following of the Alco / Mlw world vs the parts availability of the EMD / GMD world. Certainly made the BCR more interesting. Edited 1 time(s).
