Canadian Railroads > Train Ride TuesdayDate: 09/03/24 02:54 Train Ride Tuesday Author: hoggerdoug Images of my view from the cupola, northbound on the British Columbia Railway, Fort St. John subdivision. Images taken late January or early February 1974 and most likely we were on our way from Chetwynd to Beatton. Generally the through freight, Chetwynd to Beatton departed Chetwynd early afternoon and we arrived at Beatton late evening or in the wee morning hours. Long trips in the winter, not much daylight and the scenery was drab. Fortunately I had the seniority to hold this job as "tail end brakeman" and enjoyed the relative comfort of the caboose on these trips.

br4. The mighty Peace River, frozen over. br4. The wooden trestle on the north end of the bridge. The wood structure was destroyed by vandalism and fire late October 1979 and was replaced with an earthen fill. The steel structured bridge over the river was not damaged. In a few miles we will be in Taylor. At the top of the images you can see the railway right of way, the grade on both sides of the river was 2 percent or more for several miles. A few months after I took the images, I was required to do a "periodic rules examination" and the old Rules Instructor pulled a fast one giving me the "A" book examination. I suddenly found myself a "Qualified Conductor road & yard service". Even more interesting, that summer I worked as Conductor with my own crew for several months. Pretty heady stuff for a 22 year old. Thanks for looking, Doug Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/03/24 04:28 by hoggerdoug. Only worked the brakeman extra board for a couple of months before going into engine service in '79. Only through freight out of Los Angeles at the time was overnight San Diego trains. A great bunch. That last one sure could pass as a model.
