Elephants On the Gypsum Train
Author: cn6218

CN train 511, the gypsum turn between Wrights Cove and East Milford in Nova Scotia almost always is powered by back-to-back diesels, and usually ACs these days.  With no turning facilities at either end, having one unit facing each way is certainly preferable.  But from time to time operational circumstances prevent that.  For almost a week early in 2022, 511 had a pair of Tier 4 GEs, both facing east.  Four GEs had come in on 508 one night, but only one was facing west.  507's crew took that and one other for the train to Moncton, leaving 3274 and 3048 for 511 to work with.  At least the new GEs have pilots and ditch lights at both ends, so they didn't have to run at reduced speed, but I'm sure t6he visibility was not so great on the empty trip to the mine.

In this photo, from January 27, 2022, they've arrived back at Shannon Park on the Dartmouth Sub, and will soon start backing the loaded train into Goldbond's unloading facility at Wrights Cove on the shore of Bedford Basin.
