Canadian Railroads > The Former RefineryDate: 10/17/24 13:23 The Former Refinery Author: cn6218 Dartmouth, NS used to be home to two oil refineries. The smallest was originally owned by Texaco and was then sold to Ultramar when Texaco operations in Canada were sold off to settle a lawsuit with Pennzoil. It operated until the 1990s when it was decommissioned, with various components being shipped to the Middle East. The first part of that journey was actually by rail, which is probably worth revisiting here some time.
The Imperial Oil refinery lasted until about 10 years ago. As one of the smallest in the country, it couldn't really compete with the Irving refinery in Saint John (the largest in Canada), and was gradually turned into a storage facility for refined product, the vast majority of which arrives by sea. In recent years it wasn't a very significant customer for CN, only handling tanks of propane. When Crude oil By Rail was a thing, they built a couple unloading tracks, the remains of which can be seen next to GP40-2L 9418, hauling train 509 back to Dartmouth Yard on August 29 of this year. After Lac Megantic blew up in 2013, CBR fell out of favour very quickly, and I don't think these tracks were ever used for their intended purpose. Today the refinery part of the complex is mostly a bare concrete pad, with trees growing up in many places. There is still a siding on Imperial's property, which CN will use to run around cars and for short term storage, but most trains don't stop any longer.
