Funding for Shunt Enhancers...
Author: Trackside_Treasure

...was just announced. Federal Railroad Administration’s Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) grant $58.8 million to Amtrak to install Onboard Shunt Enhancement devices on 443 locomotives and 192 cab cars to prevent trains from losing shunt, which can cause problems with signal and crossing-gate activation.

Part of a $2.4B announcement. By my math, $93,000 US per installation. Maybe less if some of that is program costs or other budget wizardry.

Coming soon to Canada to eliminate VIA's Venture CN-imposed speed reductions at level crossings?

Are there really 192 cab cars now, whether on California and Surfliner cars, cabbage 40, and ex metroliner ? It sounds like a lot.

These shunt enhancers that were recently tested aren't approved yet, though, are they?  Or did I miss something?

I think it also covering places like CalTrain, the West Coast Express in BC, the RailRunner in Albequerque, and other places that have cab cars in service.

I don't think FRA would pay anything for a Vancouver, Canada commuter service. Maybe Sounder, Northstar, and Wego (Nashville).

The funding covers any cab car or NPCU operated by Amtrak in Regional or State Services including the yet to be built ICT train sets. This will cover any Amtrak services which are operated into Canada as well. The funding does not cover non-Amtrak operated equipment.
