Arnaud Railway (Wabush Mines) 25 years ago today
Author: poshell

25 years ago today I was in Pointe-Noire, QC with a brand new Nordco (formerly Pyke Mfg.) model M2 ballast regulator/snow fighter on the Arnaud Railway (Wabush Mines).
There was no shortage of snow to move during the several days the machine was being commissioned at the mine site. And yes, it was cold!
Pics 1, 2, & 3   Arnaud Railway Pyke (now Nordco) M2 ballast regulator/snow fighter, serial number 9915, built in 1999 at the Nordco (Pyke) plant in Oshawa, ON. Taken at Wabush Mines Pointe-Noire, QC January 5, 2000.

Neat piece of equipment, and very clean-lined. I presume the plow throws things far enough that snow doesn't catch on the leading edge of the retracted wings and get carried inward.

Hi Fred,
Yes, the snow curls off the V-Plow and out past the leading edge of the snow wings when they are in the tucked position.
If you look close, you will see there is a flat plate at the leading edge of the snow wing.
When opened, the snow wings compliment the front plow by carrying the snow further from the running rails.
When fully extended, the wing span is 16.5' from track center line on each side. When moving at a decent speed (10, 15, 20 mph) the snow moves well beyond that distance.

Thanks, Paul. The extra photo clarifies for me. I thought perhaps the flat plat at the end of the wings butted against the main plow; I didn't realize the set-back.

And 25 years ago today on January 6, 2000 I snapped this American crane outfit at the Arnaud Railway (Wabush Mines) shop in Pointe-Noir, QC.
Arnaud Railway 808-4001 American model 850-80 DE locomotive crane, serial number L-3569, built in 1962.
