Canadian Railroads > CBNS Train 305Date: 01/16/25 06:25 CBNS Train 305 Author: cn6218 Since the Cape Breton & Central Nova Scotia (a GWI shortline) changed their operations about 10 years ago, running trains east of Stellarton at night, I haven't made too many visits up there. But there is a turn from Stellarton to Truro, NS that runs 5 days a week, and is almost always in daylight. Since I was already in Truro on January 6 for 120 and 507, I waited a little longer until 305, the westbound road train arrived in the yard.
The first image here shows the three consecutively numbered SD40-2s hauling under the Gasper Cross footbridge in Salmon River, about half way down the Truro Yard. Unlike most other GWI properties,, washing the motive power does not seem to be a priority. In the second image the train has almost reached the west end of the yard, where they will leave the cars for the next day's CN 507, and then run down to the east end to pick up cars left by 508 that morning. The four loads of lumber on the headpin were picked up at Sproule Lumber in Valley, about mile 4 of the Hopewell Sub. The 3 SDs paused under the bridge I was standing on (currently closed to traffic, with holes in the roadway large enough to see through) while the crew changed ends on the power to become train 306 for the return trip. I was also able to get this overhead view of 3365 with a missing radiator fan. I'm not sure what the deal is with that, although maybe they don't work the power hard enough to need all three. They did something similar with the GP18 they had 24 years ago, and it was retired not long afterwards. All three SD40-2s (and a fourth, not seen here) are former BN units which came to the CBNS by way of Helm Leasing. But 3365 (former BN 7172) was built by GMD in London, even though it has the typical US spotting features of a horizontal rear headlight and a front headlight above the windshield (although this was later moved to the nose by BN). The trucks all seem to have EMD and Adirondack markings in the castings rather than Dofasco, but it's possible BN swapped the trucks out at some point in the 20+ years they owned them.
