Firefighting Friday - CPKC's Consist in Ashcroft, BC
Author: feclark

On our road trip to Ashcroft and area in June of 2024, we caught this equipment in Ashcroft, BC. The date was June 18, and the sun was conspicuously absent. I had forgotten about this stuff until I was catching up on an issue of Branchline, and saw photos of CN's rather more attractive set. This post has six photos.
1. The heart of the operation, I suppose, is bulkhead flat 911005, an apparently clever renumbering of an old MIL-built car, perhaps x-71. Length is 71-8, length between bulkheads 66-0.
2. The other end of the beast.
3. These four tanks contain which fluid we do not know, nor how everything was plumbed into the two spraying stations. More fluid in the tank cars; not sure if it's all water, or some of the modular tanks contain something else.

shame all those coors tankcars were scrapped on the SLRG ,  after the Molson merger ,they were young hauled concentrate, UP been scrapping/scrapped  the SP fire trains, BNSF bought new cars just to sit, then these, think UP has gotten some newer equipment too maybe?

4. CP 415649 was ahead (rail west) in the consist. The flexible plumbing exits the bottom of the tank car, passing through the bulkhead.
5. CP 415624 trails the bulkhead flat; the arrangement is rotated 180 degrees compared to the lead tank car.
6. CP wide-vision van 434556, pride of the fleet, brings up the rear of the consist. We might have tried for closer shots of some of the details of this firefighting train, but the yard was being actively switched, and there was quite a presence as well. Not a wise move to cross tracks.
