Canadian Railroads > L'Amiral Excursion Train in GaspéDate: 01/27/25 14:54 L'Amiral Excursion Train in Gaspé Author: cn6218 An MLW-powered excursion train operated briefly during 2013 on the Chemin de Fer de la Gaspésie. On September 22, 2013 I made a trip out to the end of the line in Gaspé to chase the train to Coin-du-Banc, when passengers disembarked and were bused to Percé for sightseeing. At the time this was the only train on this end of the line because VIA had ceased running the Chaleur because of "bridge conditions". L'Amiral is shown running along the beach at Douglastown, then crossing Rt. 132 just west of the Barrachois station (actually the reverse move), and finally running along the beach at Bridgeville towards Coin-du-Banc.
SFG RS-18-3b 1849 (former CP 8797) got this one of a kind paint job, along with a former AMT HEP generator car. The cars are former GO Transit coaches, which also spent time in Montreal commuter service. Although there was a cab car on the end, it must not have been serviceable, because once the passengers were unloaded, the train reversed to Barrachois where the RS-18 was run around the train in a short siding before the trip back to Gaspé. Shortly after I made this visit, the whole line east of New Richmond was shut down for safety reasons, stranding the MLW and other equipment there. Finally in 2017, 1849 was partially disassembled (generator and prime mover removed) and was trucked to New Richmond to be put back together. It has only worked freight trains since then. The society that ran the passenger excursions declared bankruptcy, and the rest of the equipment still sits in Gaspé at the new train station that has yet to see a VIA train. I only made two trips to see L'Amiral, and the weather wasn't great on either one, but since digital is cheap I shot the heck out of them. There should be enough for a full post later this week.
