Canadian Railroads > A Favourite Vantage PointDate: 01/28/25 07:15 A Favourite Vantage Point Author: cn6218 Nothing stays the same for ever, and that has certainly been the case in the Halifax area as far as good locations for rail photography go. One good spot that is now no longer was near mile 9 of the Bedford Sub, along the shore of Bedford Basin. On November 12, 2009 I was in place as train 120 was coming down the hill, first with the 300mm lens as they crossed the Sackville River in Bedford at mile 10.7, and then a standard 50mm shot as they neared mile 9. This spot had good lighting from mid-morning to early afternoon, usually good for 120, or 136 when it was still running, and even a good going-away view of the Ocean was possible here.
Even in 2009 the alders were starting to block the view, but what really stuck the dagger in it was the construction of a 5 or 6-story condo right next to the track about 10 years ago. The tracks (there were two until 2003) used to be right next to the water, but they started filling in the Basin with all that rock in the early '90s. It was still porous enough that that puddle of water visible in the ditch went up and down with the tide. So far nothing has been built on the far side of the one remaining track. There is talk of a commuter ferry terminal here which means that would become a parking lot, and a bridge would have to span the track, opening a new viewpoint here.
