Canadian Railroads > Trip in Mid April 2026-Ride Iconic VIA Rail RDCsDate: 01/30/25 03:57 Trip in Mid April 2026-Ride Iconic VIA Rail RDCs Author: Passfanatic It’s been confirmed that I will be riding the VIA Rail Sudbury to White River route this April. I’ll be flying into Sudbury on 4/16. I’ll be spending the night of 4/16 at the in Downtown Sudbury, take the westbound train from Sudbury to White River on 4/17. I’ll be spending the night of 4/17 in White River. On 4/18, I train back from White River to Sudbury and spend that night at a motel in Downtown Sudbury. Although I wanted to do this trip later in the Spring, other activities planned back home later in the Spring resulted in me making the decision to book the trip for the dates mentioned. On 4/19, I fly back to NJ.
Please give me any tips about what to expect during the journey? In Sudbury where are the best spots to photograph freight and the RDCs? How is the ridership count on the Sudbury to White River route during the off season? Ty. There is a donut shop in White River ( Robins) open 24 hrs. Buy something to eat on the trip back, Be prepared for the cold, White River can be one of the coldest spots in Canada in winter. Hotel choices are White River Motel and Continental Inn. Call from the stn and both will usually do pick ups. Its a fair walk uptown otherwise. Have a good trip. The stn in Sudbury for the Budds is downtown so you can railfan the CP yard while waiting.-MB Date: 01/30/25 07:51 Re: Trip in Mid April 2026-Ride Iconic VIA Rail RDCs Author: Railroad39 Watch the TVO Documentary "Tripping Train 185".
It is a 2-part series that originally aired on TV Ontario in March 2023. Steve CP Belleville Sub Hogger (ret) Smiths Falls, Ont. Date: 01/30/25 08:58 Re: Trip in Mid April 2026-Ride Iconic VIA Rail RDCs Author: PumpkinHogger I *think* it's still 2025. The WH hasn't changed that...yet...

I last rode the Sudbury to White River Budds July 27 & 28, 2023. Beautiful weather both directions, a great on-board crew, and only a handful of passengers occupied the 3-unit consist. If you're in Sudbury the day before your Budd adventure, and have transportation, consider taking a jaunt to Capreol to snag some CN action. Don't want to spoil your visuals on the two-day trip, but here are a few pics from my journey. CN office building 10 Front St. Capreol, ON July 26, 2023. CN Capreol yard Capreol, ON July 26, 2023. I stayed at the White River Motel for my one night in White River. Close to Robins donuts, Subway, Esso Convenience store, and The Continental Motel dining room. For both legs of the journey, be sure to grab a sub, donuts, chips, water/pop, snacks. All you'll be able to purchase on board the train is soft drinks and chocolate bars. Date: 01/30/25 15:56 Ride Iconic VIA Rail RDCs Author: jp1822 The interior is comfortable? Looks it with thew latest upgrades. Skyline car would be great, but the Budd's have great scenic windows! I've never done the trip, but I am thinking of doing a trip this summer. Concerned that my back may not hold up for the journey of the seats are uncomfortable. But, if I can sprawl out a bit, I'll be fine too. Is it a busy train in say June or late August? I would think it may be busier, but does it really get "packed?" Open seating for the journey? And if I recall correctly, you can get off briefly at certain stations to walk around at. Not long, but a brief on/off so to speak - if the train is relatively on time!
Date: 01/30/25 16:16 Re: Ride Iconic VIA Rail RDCs Author: Passfanatic Folks, thanks again for the tips!! Great preview photos of what I have to look forward to!! I’m doing this trip this April but yes, I’ve been told that it is still cold up in White River Ontario during that month.
As far as lodging goes, I’ll be staying at the Days Inn in Sudbury the nights of 4/16 and 4/18. On the night of 4/17, I’ll be staying at the Continental Motel in White River. I probably will also get sandwiches for the trip on the train! Posted from iPhone |
