Canadian Railroads > New Paint on an Old GP38-2Date: 02/04/25 09:15 New Paint on an Old GP38-2 Author: cn6218 CN's 4700-series GP38-2s are some of the oldest diesels on the roster these days. Unlike the SD40u and GP9RM rebuilds, these have stayed essentially the same since they were purchased from GMD over 50 years ago. Unfortunately most seem to be wearing a very faded version of the zebra stripes they were painted with in the 1980s. Even the original 5500-series numbers are starting to show through on the cab sides. I caught 4732 (with GP38-2W 4771) working the Bedford Quarry as local 507 back on March 10, 2013. 4771 would have been delivered in stripes and perhaps has never had a new paint job since then.
507 is hauling empty cement hoppers out of the Old Quarry, with what are likely asphalt tankers (no placards) sitting on the main line, ready to back to Rockingham with some other cars. About half an hour later the train was a mile away from Rockingham Yard on the Transfer track, passing the Prince's Lodge rotunda. The old road number digits were showing through on 4771 as well, leading me to believe that this was probably its original 1973 paint job. Even GP40-2L 9591 was wearing contemporary paint with the url and all. 507 was heading west on the Transfer Track (about mile 6.6) at 13:41 with asphalt loads for the New Quarry.
With switch points facing east at the quarry, the train needed to go to Kinsac (mile 20) so the power could run around, and by 15:00 they were heading east at Windsor Jct. (mile 15). By 15:12 they were tying up traffic (and looking good doing it!) as they shoved the asphalt loads into the spur at roughly mile 13.2 of the Bedford Sub.
