Canadian Railroads > Needs New PaintDate: 03/02/25 10:34 Needs New Paint Author: cn6218 I was across the harbour in Dartmouth on Thursday, following the "West End Shunter" (local 505) as they switched some industries in the Burnside Industrial Park. GP38-2s 4731 and 4700 have been on this job for a while, but I had only heard them on the radio, not actually seen them. 4700 got the current paint scheme a few years ago, and other than being kind of dirty, doesn't look too bad. 4731, on the other hand...
4731 was delivered from GMD in late 1972/early 1973 in the large noodle scheme and with road number 5531, but was repainted into the zebra stripes some time later in the 1970s, I would guess. The renumbering happened in 1988 to make room for the SD60Fs, and the shadow of the original digits can be seen on the side of the cab. Back in June of 2002, 4731 was working solo as train 507 as the train neared the Bayer Lake Industrial Park on the Halifax side of the harbour. They had a single load of steel for Russel Metals at the end of the line in Lakeside. GTD ![]() ![]() Date: 03/02/25 17:35 Re: Needs New Paint Author: NiagaraMike An understatement for sure!
