Canadian Railroads > 50 Years OldDate: 03/19/25 17:36 50 Years Old Author: cn6218 On a sunny day last week I caught the "Fifteen Hundred" job doing some work at Pace Yard in Halifax, NS. GP40-2Ls 9576 and 9591 were hauling some well cars, which had arrived on 120 that morning. out of a track in the H-yard so they could be shoved down to the Fairview Cove container pier. These two are members of CN class GF-430c, which indicates they were meant for road service when they were built. Most were also geared for 75 mph, a far cry from their present duty as yard goats.
The GF-430c class was built by GMD in London between February and October 1975, so if these two haven't officially reached the half century mark, they will soon. 9591 has obviously been repainted, but I suspect 9576 has been too, since the "75 mph" and gear ratio stencil is missing from the side of the cab. I'm told that inside the cab, next to the speedometer, some still say "MAXIMUM SPEED 80 MPH". ...jr Date: 03/20/25 11:14 Re: 50 Years Old Author: cn6218 The 4-axle units are almost always on 120, although there are probably exceptions to that rule. If they need to go to Dartmouth, that's one of the "other duties" 511's crew will do once they are finished with the gypsum. I think they give them a going-over at the roundhouse, make sure they are full of fuel and pointing the right direction, before they are sent to Dartmouth.
