MLW Monday at the Summit
Author: cn6218

On April 9, 1996, a day that looks a lot like today (weatherwise) in Nova Scotia, the Windsor & Hantsport wayfreight was passing the station sign at Mount Uniacke, the highest point on the line between Windsor Jct. and Windsor, NS.

This line was built in the 1850s as the Nova Scotia Railway, the second segment after the track between Halifax and Truro was completed.  It was originally broad gauge, but converted to standard once it was taken over by the Intercolonial Rwy. in the 1860s.  Later, this segment was leased to the Dominion Atlantic, which had also bought the Windsor & Annapolis, and early in the 20th Century it all came under control of Canadian Pacific.

Although known for operating MLWs on their eastern lines, the RS-23s didn't arrive here until after CP sold the remaining track to Iron Roads in 1994.  The MLWs lasted until 2005, when they were replaced with GP9s.  The Windsor & Hantsport was effectively abandoned in 2010.

The SW1200RS unit were virtually the only diesels CP used on the DAR.  A pair of S-3s was tried for the gypsum trains very early on, and one RS-18u was a temprary resident during a track rehabilitation program in the 1980s.
