Restored passenger cars in Cranbrook.
Author: NKP779

30 years ago there were gorgeous restorations going on at Cranbrook- mostly or entirely CPR 1920's cars. Locomotive & Railway Preservation magazine had stunning coverage of same. Recently I heard that 20+ heavyweight cars were sold and moved to Park City, Utah. The internet is kinda vague about what is left at Cranbrook. I am planning a vacation that way this year. Are there any first hand reports?

The Cranbrook collection of cars are still there at the museum. It was a wonderful museum when I was there a few years ago. See:

The ~23 cars that went to Heber were from the BC NRHS collection that were in and around Vancouver BC, primarily the New Westminster area. RYPN and others covered it back in May 2019.

If you're driving and happen to be in Revelstoke the railway museum there is pretty well done too.

The Cranbrook History Centre, formerly the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel, is well-worth visiting.  They have a large number of passenger cars, from the early 1900''s to the 1970's, on display in four rows.  Admission is in the form of tours and the guides will show you cars based on the tour option you choose.  The restorations are fantastic; others are in progress and one has been deliberately left 'untouched'.  I was there last July.

If you have a Canadian Trackside Guide, or can purchase one, the complete list of cars is itemized in section 3, as are all preserved Canadian railway equipment.

The cars to which you refer to were formerly owned by the BC Chapter of the NRHS and were sold to the Heber Valley Railroad a few years ago and were moved in 2021.

Thanks to all for straightening things out.  Unknowingly I had combined two separate topics, incorrectly.  Cranbrook and Revelstoke will be on the itinerary this year!

The cars that went to Utah were from a collection in Vancouver that belonged, I believe to the =18pxNational Railway Historical Society BC Chapter collection. It went to the Heber Valley Railway in Heber City Utah. From a 2019  Andy Cassidy article (OKthe PK) at https://www.okthepk.ca/dataCprSiding/articles/202001/scrapNews01.htm
