Train Ride In Spain
Author: fredstout

We are visiting Barcelona and we would like to schedule a one day train ride from Barcelona to any place in Spain (or France) that would enable us to enjoy the beautiful scenery (mountains preferred). Any thoughts or suggestions?

How about taking the metre gauge FGC (regional railway) line to Montserrat to visit the shrine?

I second that...the FGC connects with a modern rack railway train that takes you to the monetary. There are also two funiculars from the main monetary area to reach other parts of the mountain. Well worth the trip.

Or, if you would like to visit an attractive beach town, try Sitges (pronounced "sit-jess"). It's about 35 minutes from Sants on the R2 Sud suburban line, with some nice coastal views along the way.

Or, if you want more train time and some high-speed running, a day trip to Madrid is possible. The trip is quite scenic, and once there the Prado and Reina Sofia art museums are a short walk from Puerto de Atocha station.

We took the train from Barcelona to Montserrat which was a delightful combination of local Barcelona narrow gauge regional service plus the rack railway to the top of the mountain. Terrific ride but then again, it does have steel flanged wheels.

Thanks for the suggestion.
