More steam on the Underground
Author: 86235

London Underground have found another reason to dust off 0-4-4T no. 1 and send it round the Circle Line again, the 150th anniversary of the Hammersmith and City Line. It's happening on two days, Saturdays the 2nd and 9th of August.

The Victorians managed without gas masks, I'm sure we will too.

The good thing is the special trains on these two occasions will run during daylight hours. For the Underground 150 last year most ran on a Sunday evening, but this time LU are feeling more confident. The first train leaves Northfields at 08:24, arriving at Moorgate at 09:17. It leaves Moorgate at 09:55 arriving Hammersmith 10:26. Leaves Hammersmith at 10:58 and a half (yes, really) arriving back at Moorgate at 11:32 and a half. It does another three return trips to Hammersmith before returning to Northfield arriving at 17:14. The consist will be the same as in 2013, Metropolitan Railway 0-4-4T no. 1 (Neasden 1896), the Bluebell Railway's four car Metropolitan Railway Ashbury set dating back to 1900, the four wheel 1887 Metropolitan Railway Jubilee Coach and the Metropolitan Railway milk van (which carries water for no.1). 1923 built 1200 hp Bo-Bo Metropolitan Vickers electric no. 12 Sarah Siddons will top and tail with no.1

Thanks for pointing this out, I just happened to be in London this week so I booked the Northfields to Moorgate segment on 2 Aug.

I'm sitting here, imagining someone who just steps into a station for yet another trip to the other side of town, and instead of the tube train he's expecting, a steam engine shows up.

Now THAT has to be an amusing moment.

I hope it's worth it, I'm out of town this weekend but hope to catch up next.

There were some shocked looks during the Underground 150 celebrations last year. I guess there will be a whole host of 150th anniversaries in the next few years so the novelty will wear off.
