Germany 2014 part 1
Author: bakersfielddave

Scenes at Munchen Ost in the late afternoon

a Meridian bound for Salzburg

one of a number of services hauled by class 218 diesels around Munich

a frieght hauled by electrics the size most probably had it picking up more traffic en route there were quite a number of freight movements through here

i then went by train to Frielassing then another on to Berchtesgarden that night

a short fuel or gas train hauled by a large ex east german railways russian built loco i think

Garching tower one of numerous such places on the line i took from Munich to Muhldorf

a train of the private BLB railway at Berchtesgarden the end of this days travels

the next few scenes are at Berchtesgarden

a station rebuilt by the political regime of the mid to late 1930s to substantially larger dimensions considering it was at the end of of branch railway most likely to impress visiting leaders of foreign countries

there was a rail line built past here heading back north towards Salzburg but i beleive it was closed in 1942 not having ever seen a regular service the tunnell is in pristine condition to this day

the 'union' steel stamp was interesting the date would perhaps go back to the opening of the line would it have been imported rail?

They were Deutsch Reichsbahn's class 132, built as you say in the USSR. Handsome looking diesel electrics known as Ludmillas to railfans.

The last part Reichenhall - Berchtesgaden (not Berchtesgarden) of the Connection Munchen - Freilassing (- Salzburg) Reichenhall - Berchtesgaden was opened 1888.

1907 arrived a kind of interurban from Salzburg from East along the Königssee Ache (River). 1909 this line was extended to the Königssee (See = lake). It was closed 1938 making place for a modern street.

This closed line should be replaced by an extension of the line from Reichenhall as a main line to Salzburg. Realized were the new now oversized Hauptbahnhof and the tunnel, then the war stopped thus dreams.

Now a new Interurban is in discussion and in discussion and ...

A potential for this line is existing. The car traffic is overcrowded.

Either Union Giesserei (cast foundry) in Konigsberg now Kaliningrad

Another possibility is that it is from the "UNION Aktiengesellschaft für Bergbau, Eisen und Stahlindustrie" (not to confuse with the "UNION Dortmund", which used "UNION D" as sign), which was the largest rail mill in Germany in 1911. In 1926, it was merged with the "Vereinigte Stahlwerke".

Thanks bakersfielddave for a great series of pictures! The FLIRT3 in the first picture looks unusual, at least compared to those I'm accustomed to see. 5 tailored modules would of course be unusual to Stadler Flirt anyway...

One thought about the immensely large diameter tunnel in Berhtesgaden: was this one of the very few sections in existence where move to Hitler's 4 meter gauge was envisioned?

Hi Mc,

on this Flirt3 only the 2 end trucks are driven, all Jacobs are not driven. It is a hard riding MU with small spacing seat rows. Riding comfort you can compare with the DB "Silberlinge" from the 50th, as shown in pic 2.

The tunnel is built for a standard gauge 2 track line.

Interesting, thank you for fist hand experience on driving characteristics! I suppose 2720 kW on end driving trucks can be a bit much if the ends are "lightweight". Manufacturer does not seem to give out the kilonewtons / lbf on this vehicle, unlike many others, possibly suggesting they might have had this rough riding concern too.

You are saying too that this Veolia + BOB EMU has cramped interiors? Did they also save on the interior materials like some of the other latest orders from other manufacturers?

And thanks for advice on the tunnel...it just looked like this one rail was heading to the center of the tunnel and knowing what Hitler was planning it was just easy to guess about the connection.

The FLIRT EMU 6 (6-car train) shown in the first picture of this thread has 4 x 500 kW i.e. 2000 kW in total and 1000 kW per bogie / truck and a weight of about 179 tons. Short term power is 4 x 680 kW, so the 2720 kW are just for peaks. The FLIRT EMU 3 (3-car train) has 3 x 500 kW and a weight of 114 tons.

Yes, definitely it is cramped.

Most likely: There is a large yard close just two stations with the S-Bahn to the East (Berg am Laim) and a very large container handling facility just one station further down the route to Mühldorf (München-Riem). Guess the two class 186 electrical locomotives are heading there in order to pick up their "full-size train".

And glad you enjoyed the class 218 diesels. Starting mid of December, most of the traffic between Mühdorf and Munich and Kempten and Munich will be taken over by the class 245 multi-engine units from Bombardier.

Well, I meant that the power is momentarily / in peaks 2720 kw according to the manufacturer, what ever this moment means. Any idea how long period before overheating occurs might be? Or if this is only available by overriding some system?.

Confirmed: from now on we must consider this quite large EMU with 333 seats also cramped (for us big Europeans)!

Thanks!

Yes it is cramped and hard, not upholstered. Munchen - Salzburg is a 1:50 hours ride. But after about 1 hour your a.. feel pain.

In aspects of operations the Meridians are doing a good job.
