In 2002 I had an opportunity to visit the land of my ancestors and I was taken to see the Molli. Here is the locomotive for the day I was there. I rode over the entire line.

Ah, the Mollibahn what a great railway! Steam 364 days a year, street running, superb looking locomotives, 'normal' fares; what is there not to like.

And what amazed me was that the Molli ran on a regular schedule in conjunction with DB whose standard guage tracks served the other side of the dual service depot.

And where IS this Mollibahn of which you speak? "Mecklenburg" is not a universally known location: somewhere in the Germanic world, I imagine, but where?

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is a Land (State) in north Germany, on the Baltic coast. Until 1989 it was part of the DDR. The Molli or to give its full title the Mecklenburgische Bäderbahn is a 900mm railway which connects Bad Doberan, a town SW of Rostock with the Baltic Sea resorts of Heiligendamm and Kühlungsborn. It's only 10 miles long, has five steam engines (I think), three 2-8-2T built by Orenstein & Koppel in 1932, an 0-8-0 from Karl Marx Locomotive Works built in the 1950s and 2-8-2T 99 2324 which was built at Meiningen Steam Locomotive Works in 2009, and is the same design as the Orenstein and Koppel trio. They are supremely elegant engines, here's one at speed and one threading its way down Mollistrasse in downtown Bad Doberan, which trains do once or twice an hour every day of the year. If you ever get the chance I would recommend a trip to Bad Doberan for a day on the Molli.

Thank you for the great follow up photos of the Molli and the location explanation. It sure was a cool ride from Bad Doberon to Kuhlingsborn.
