Derailment (runaway) on the Brenner line
Author: kilux

On December the 22nd a train with supposedly no brakes derailed a couple of kilometers after departing the Italian/Austrian boarder station Brenner. The line is closed until 30th at least.
No casualties.

Well, have you ever heard of Innsbruck? Very famous. Austria.

North of Brenner is Austria, south of Brenner Italy. The border goes right through the northern part of the yard.

Here is one of my cabrides of this route, the derailment happened at about minute 07:00

No brakes...likely due to ice?

Unlikely, ice and snow can effect braking effort, but I run this route for more than 10 years and never encountered anything that came even close to loosing brakes, even under extreme winter conditions.

I have heard of Innsbruck. I also have family that live in Austria, but they live near Vienna so I'm not familiar with the cities in western Austria.

Erm, Vienna is in the east, while Innsbruck is in the west. I suppose however that you do have a reasonable question in that all the diagram is in German, which no doubt reflects the fact that the South Tyrol is in Italy (known there as the Alto Adige) and used to be part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and indeed remained in Austria until 1919. The border station is actually at Brenner/Brennero, at the summit, while a major centre in Italy is Bolzano, which appears on chart as Bosen. The issue is further complicated by the fact that even today many if not most people in the South Tyrol speak German as their first language.

Austria is to the left on the gradient profile, Italy is to the right. The gradient profile is Pro Mille rather than in percent, move the decimal point one place to the left to get the gradient in percent.
