Three HST shots from an extended 1980 ramble around the UK. I think this trip coincided with the longest period of overcast days ever!

1) First shot was in Bath on April 30, 1980. I believe this is an eastbound HST.
2) Second shot was also in Bath on same date. I believe this is an westbound HST.
3) Third shot is in Durham on April 22, 1980 of a southbound (I think) HST.

Good to see these 'oldies'! I like the view at Durham, with the whole train in - a view now lost to trees. Interestingly, it has the 2 catering vehicles, the TRUB & TRUK. TRUK was kitchen for first class meals. This consist didn't last very long. chris uk

Still using them down here in Australia.Introduced with huge fanfare.Unlike British Rail, that did substantial track realignment work to realise the full potential of this technology,New South Wales Rail just posted speed advisory signs along the Sydney-Melbourne route.It had the potential to almost halve the travel time between the two cities ,but rather,it took barely 1.5 hours off the trip.

I was under the impression that the Australian XPT was an (essentially) HST power car with a Budd carriages, some of which were sleepers. HSTs in the UK had Mk3 carriages and no sleepers (but there were loco hauled Mk3 sleepers).
