I went out south east from Rome to a small station called Anagni Fiuggi  this was the actual  location in 1965 where some scenes from the film 'Von Ryans Express' were made where the captured German train commander escaped and was shot in a gun battle with Frank Sinatra and Trevor Howard

the area has not changed much in half a century

in the film there were some steps leading up to a police station were Sinatra had to shoot the woman who attempted to escape, these steps seem to have gone since..,.there has been some stabilisation work in the cutting  the path from the road bridge  to the site of the top of the  steps was still there but heavily overgrown and unable to be reached .

the station cafe

intending passengers for Rome have to cross the line here

a small  office staffed by FS employees controls signalling and can stop trains heading south....  the freight with the vectron loco  was stopped for a short while to allow this procedure

Another place where 'Von Ryans Express' was filmed was Roma Ostience station

but in the film was it made into Firenze SMN

this was the scene earlier in the movie where the train arrived and the prisoners and guards were fed

again the place has remained unchanged even the buildings in the backgound are the same

Did you notice how they paint the rails white?

When my family and I were in Bologna in June, we managed to get on a Milan-bound Tren Italia high speed train when our intent was to get on a Venice-bound one.  With such close headways, little signage and rare PA announcements, it's easy to do, especially with us being first-time visitors and unfamiliar with everything.  We explained our situation to the conductor and we got off at the first stop out of Bologna, which was the Reggio Emilia AV Mediopadana station.  After being there for about 15 minutes, we caught a Tren Italo back to Bologna and corrected our error, taking a later train to Venice.  We got to our hotel in Venice after midnight.

Bologna has a huge freight yard.

Thank you Dave, your European series is fantastic. Even more so for me as my wife and I were in Bologna, Parma, Emilio Romagna, etc. just last month. Great memories brought to life by your photos. Thanks again.

I lived about 15 min walk from Ostiense, and when I saw Von Ryan's Express for the second time, I immediately recognized the area, since I used the station many times. The station building, by the way, was constructed by Mussolini to impress Hitler, who arrived at the station on a visit to Italy. The room in the station where he was feted is occasionally open, although I never made it there. Ostiense is located near a Metro "B" line station and also the station of the line to Ostia.

Thanks for these pictures which bring so many good memories of Italy and of train travel there. Grazie delle foto e dei tanti buoni ricordi!

Even people more familiar with the trains get caught. I once boarded a local train, only to find it was going in the wrong direction. (I had not been able to hear the announcement.) I just got off at the next station and waited for a train in the other direction, which arrived within a few minutes. No problem in a country with frequent service.
