More from the BR Wayback Machine
Author: dwatry

Posting a couple quick shots before work (from home)!
1)  BR Class 31 on a parcels train at Reading in May 1980.
2)  BR Parcels DMUs at Shrewsbury April 5, 1980.
3)  BR Class 26 switching (or should I say shunting?) at Kyle of Lochalsh (Scotland) April 16, 1980.

Loving all of this. Question about number 3: is this just a wharf-side (quay-side?) group of tracks, or is/was there a car ferry operation as well?

Thanks for sharing!

I'm pretty sure just a quay-side transloading operation to ferries/boats.  According to my historic atlases there were never railways on the Isle of Skye so nothing to carferry over to.

Very nice. As much as I like mail & express trains, the last photo with all the freight wagons is wonderful.

Nice images. Hard to believe that's what was operating in Britain 40 years ago.

Lovely Duncan, and to think people moaned like mad about how boring everything had become.

Apparently there was a railway on the isle of skye... a narrow gauge one to a marble quarry/works.

I was at the Kyles on a very wet day around the same time.  The crew from Inverness bought the passenger train in, went and picked up those ballast cars and took them for loading and then returned light to couple up to the passenger cars and return to Inverness.

Nice collection of the once numerous GUV's, BG,s and an ex Southern PMV on the parcels train.
