European Railroad Discussion > Blue Wagon-Lits Sleepers still operating in Europe?Date: 05/02/23 20:11 Blue Wagon-Lits Sleepers still operating in Europe? Author: ApproachCircuit Maybe some of the eastern Bloc countries have a few in circulation within their borders?
I rode on some in Spain in th 80's. At each end of the car was a very small steam boiler with attendent coal bunker! About the size of a unit one still finds in homes for winter heat. My compartment had a urinal which swiveled out from the woodwork. Very clever. Some of these cars were originally built in the U.K. in the 1920's for european service. There aren't that many overnight trains in operation, but those that are use modern equipment Date: 05/04/23 06:11 Re: Blue Wagon-Lits Sleepers still operating in Europe? I remember leaving Paris one evening around 1980 on the Night Ferry to London. I had the window lowered and and kept thinking "I KNOW there isn't a steam locomotive on this train yet I keep smelling coal smoke". It was only later that I learned about the little boilers. Incidentally those Wagon-Lis sleepers were the only ones where the sleeping compartments were equipped with life preservers! Gordon |
