York station is certainly one of the outstanding Victorian-era stations still in daily use in the UK. I don't think the XC and LNER trains are competing for Edinburgh - London business however. Cross Country services at York are typically linking Scotland with southern and southwestern England. The franchise's purpose is to provide long distance service that bypasses London, where through travel almost always requires a time-consuming change of station.
