Just some trains at twilight....🎶
Author: 86235

Twilight yesterday around Bishton on the South Wales Mainline, east of Newport.

A pair of 800/0s on a westbound London Paddington to Swansea and Carmarthen service.

A Freightliner Heavy Haul 66602 on 6B11, empty stone hoppers from Hayes & Harlington (in West London) to East Usk Yard in Newport.

A Great Western class 166 on a Cardiff to Portsmouth Harbour service, still wearing First Great Western blue.

Two westbounds; a Transport for Wales 170 from Cheltenham and one of the remaining Castle Class HSTs on the 2U22 Penzance to Cardiff. From the December timetable change the remaining three HST diagrams will be between Penzance and Plymouth. After 47 years the age of the HST in South Wales is coming to an end.

Very nice video Nick. Is that a hand operated level crossing and is it still in use?

Thanks, the crossing is very much in use but it's not hand operated anymore. The operator just pushes a couple of buttons now.

Nice, Nick.  It will be a sad day when the last HST is retired.  What a success story though.  I still contend they are the most comfortable trains in the U.K.

Thank you for the wonderfull video.

If I am not out of bounds here with this question,
how much electric power is consumed by the
railroads and how much if any is returned with
regernative braking if it is used?

Are there any rack railways in Great Britain or Ireland??

Thanks much,

Leon

Only one, the Snowdon Mountain Railway which climbs to the summit of Yr Wyddfa (3560 ft).
