The final class 66 turned out by Progress Rail in Muncie in 2015 was 66779, which GBRf named Evening Star and painted and lined out in British Rail's Brunswick Green passenger steam locomotive livery. This past week it's been in South Wales on the daily service from Margam to Dee Marsh and back.

1: On Thursday the overnight loaded train to Dee Marsh came to grief when it tripped a wheel flat detector at Tram Inn, just over the border in England. The train was then stopped at Hereford. I expected them to set out the offending wagon / wagons but perhaps that wasn't possible, so instead the whole train returned (at restricted speed) to Llanwern steelworks in Newport. Here it is passing St Devereux, between Tram Inn and the English / Welsh border at Pontrilas

2: Friday's loaded train ran without a hitch, 66779 returning with a lightweight 6V75 of just six wagons. It passed Penpergwm, south of Abergavenny about 30 minutes early

3: Today's train was almost full length - 25 wagons, it's passing Pandy in the valley of the River Monnow at about 12:20 today.

Sadly 66779 is rather grimy, a consequence of its time on the autumn Railhead Treatment trains. It needs a good wash. It's off to pastures new this evening so I'm guessing it won't be back next week.

Hi Nick - cool shots!  Wasn't Evening Star a 2-10-0?  Was it ever painted in the Brunswick Green passenger scheme?

Yes, it was, right from the start.
