Steam into Spring on the North Norfolk Railway
Author: RailRyder

This Easter Weekend the North Norfolk Railway, based in Sheringham, England is hosting their annual Steam into Spring gala. The three engines in use are:

Visiting Great Western Railway 2-8-0 locomotive, No. 4277 “Hercules”, was designed for use on heavy coal trains in the Welsh valleys and based at Aberbeeg for most of its working life being withdrawn from there in 1964 and sent to Barry scrapyard. After languishing for 22 years 4277 was rescued in June 1986 and restored to full working order. “Hercules” is now owned by the Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway where the powerful locomotive was named after the legendary Greek hero renowned for his strength; this is the engine’s first visit to the North Norfolk Railway.

4277 will be working alongside “Wissington” which dates from 1938 and worked at the British Sugar Corporation plant at Wissington. In 1978 she was the last steam engine in commercial ownership in East Anglia and was saved for use on the North Norfolk Railway. After a period out of service and then away on loan she will return to NNR service over the Easter weekend. “Wissington” will be paired with the Railway’s train of magnificently restored 4 and 6 wheeled carriages dating from Victorian times.

Completing the line-up will be Y14 class locomotive No. 564.  She was built for the Great Eastern Railway in 1912 and has spent almost her entire life in East Anglia. The veteran 112 year-old engine will be hauling the Railway’s unique “Quad-Art” train – four teak-bodied carriages designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and which entered service 100 years ago in 1924.

The weather has been challenging, to say the least!
