European Railroad Discussion > Steam on the Marches Line

Two steam excursions have run over the Shrewsbury to Newport (South Wales) Welsh Marches Line in the past week. Last Saturday saw GWR Castle Class 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe on a Cathedrals Express from Birmingham to Cardiff and back and on Tuesday 61306 LNER B1 Mayflower on a Welsh Marches Express from South Devon to Shrewsbury and back. Both were assisted by a class 47 diesel on the rear of the train, providing the the hotel power and some extra tractive effort on the grades.
