Couple Hours in Codogno IT
Author: dwatry

We recently spent a month living in Milan, during which time I did a lot of train and tram riding.  One day I rode a local train south to Codogno to spend a few hours photographing trains.  Codogno is on the old mainline from Milan to Bologna and Rome near Piacenza.  Before the high-speed lines were built, it was very busy with all the long distance trains, as well as the freights and locals.  Now most of the long distance trains are over on the high speed lines, but there are still ample freight and local trains to keep things interesting.   A few intercity trains remain on this line.

1)  First train after arriving was the departure of a Trenord Stadler DMU for Pavia via a cross-country branchline.
2)  Next was a northbound empty stock movement behind a Trenitalia Class 402.  The ped bridge gives it a Roman aqueduct look here.
3)  First freight was this southbound train behind a Mercitalia Class 494.   Too bad about the graffiti, which is plentiful in Italy.

4)  Trenitalia Class 401 rolling north with more empty intercity stock.   These were originally built as Class 402 double-enders, and were rebuilt by CAF as single-enders.    Thanks to SOO6617 for providing correct info.
5)  Mercitalia Class 405 on a southbound train of empty flatcars.
6) Trenord Class 421 Hitachi EMU heading south.

7)  Beacon Leasing Vectron on northbound train of empty flats.  Couldn't deteremine a class number here.  Empty flats seem to be going both directions.  Hmmm....
8)  Trenord Class 421 northbound.
9)  Trenord Class 464 in push mode on a southbound train.

16)  Trenord EMU coming off the Cremona line and pulling into the stub track at Codogno.
17)  Trenord Class 464 leading a southbound train.
18)  One of the cool features at Codogno is this train arrival board that lights up when a train approaches to show which direction the train is approaching from.   A bell also rings, so you get plenty of notice here about arriving trains!  Also, at Italian stations you can tell when a freight train is coming, because they make an announcement about the fact that the next train at platform x will not stop.  That's usually a freight.

Good place to spend a few hours, with a good kebab stand around the corner from the station for lunch.

These are all really great pics, thanks for taking time to post them!  It's so fascinating to see how other countries rail systems work.  We were in Amsterdam for a cruise earlier this year and had time to shoot some of the rail scene.  Your post reminds me I need to get these on here for the guys that have an interest in international railroading.

Duncan, the E401 electrics are rebuilt from the former
E402A class originally built as double-cabbed.
They had Firema mechanical parts with Ansaldo built/
Siemens designed electrical equipment. Forty were
built between 1994 - 1996. The upgrade was indeed
done by CAF.

Number 13 is a Bombardier TRAXX DC2 locomotive.
