European Railroad Discussion > Milan Trams Part 4 - the Modern TramsDate: 08/27/24 19:03 Milan Trams Part 4 - the Modern Trams Author: dwatry For the last installment on the trams of Milan, I'll cover several classes of modern trams all together. All are low-floor articulated multi-section trams, and they run on a variety of lines. Personally, I found the low-floor trams less comfortable than the older high-floor trams, partly because the aisles are so narrow because of the wheelwells, and also because it's hard to find what I would call a "normal" seat - the seats are often at different heights and in different configurations. So although the low-floor cars are easier to board, I preferred the high-floor cars.
Milan has 2 main groups of modern low-floor cars. The 7000 series are Adtranz Eurotrams from 2001-02, and are painted dark green. They only have 20 of these, and they seem to stay on Line 15 to Rozzano, so I did not even encounter these until my last week in Milan. Much more common are the 7100, 7500 and 7600 series cars, which are Ansaldo Breda Sirio trams, delivered in the 2002-2009 timeframe. A few samples: 1) Line 9 is a very useful circumferential line. Here is a LIne 9 Sirio tram in Porta Venezia. 2) Another Sirio tram on Line 14 on Via Cenesio. 3) Another shot on Line 9 - this time in Porta Romana. Edited 1 time(s). 5) Outbound car on Line-14 in Monumentale. 6) Sometimes city life just intrudes on a photographer's well-planned shot. Here's a Line 9 car on Viale Sabotino with a cyclist who arrived just as I was lining up the photo. Gotta capture the reality! We walked across farmland from here to get to a restaurant.
8) Adtranz Eurotram on Line 15 at the end of the line in Rozzano. 9) Sirio tram running through the shopping district on Via Torino. And that's all I'll post for now on the Milan trams. On to trams in Torino, Zurich and Bern, as well as a few trains here and there. Nice to see the contemporary equipment, too, much as I prefer the exterior look of the older, more traditional cars. And I agree on the interiors of the low-floor cars, at least for those that I have ridden elsewhere - kinda strange in terms of seating. I'm with you in preferring the high-floor cars. Looking forward to seeing them all in my future visit to Milan. MC |
