IORE Locomotives- The Biggest and The Best
Author: SvenMolson

The IORE class locomotives are likely the second most powerful electric in the world. The 34 units are employed by LKAB, the Swedish iron ore conglomerate. Hauling 68 car/wagons, they operate from Kiruna, Sweden to Lulea on Sweden's east coast and Narvik, Norway on the west coast. Producing 7200 hp, they regularly operate at 50 mph. The units are super quiet with little if no rocking motion.

Photo #1 - A pair of IORE's wait in the hole at Abisko Oostra.
Photo #2 - Broadside view.
Photo #3 - Fabricated ruck showing the connecting rod that prevents " truck tilt."  Note the small sand boxes.  These units don't slip except under extreme conditions.

Photo #1 The Kiruna Mine, extending more than a mile deep, it is the largest underground iron mine in world.
Photo #2 A load is preparing to head towards Narvik.
Photo #3 Of interest is this operation is more than 130 miles north of the Arctic, operates year round, 10 to 12 trains a day, each way.

Tusen Takk for looking.

Ha det bra,

There is a Chinese electric built by Bombardier which is a tad larger.

Is this the line that uses Russian style couplers instead of buffers.

Yes, you are correct.  Initially US Type F' couplers were ordered but due to the of changing out the existing fleet of ore cars, the idea was shelved.  The first were equipped with Type F on the B end of the units.

Wow, they are monsters.  I didn't get to see them.  We were at my daughters wedding when we visited Stockholm.  Thank for the great coverage.

EMD had that 10,000 HP electric demonstrator back in the mid 1970's.

Nice shots and interesting operation. Stadler's EURO 9000 develops 9MW (12000hp) and is marketed as the most powerful electric in Europe..

Those are great photos and impressive locomotives.  Hoping to get up to Narvik next year.
