First Look at Monterosso trains 9/17/24
Author: erielackawanna

Spent a couple hours on Monterosso in Cinque Terre, Italy, on 9/17/24. Here are some of my favorite shots.

Image one - FS Trenitalia Intercity train 511, traveling the 994 km route from Turin to Salerno, is guided into the south tunnel at Monterosso station by a powerful CAF E401 electric locomotive. The E401, a rebuilt unit from the original E402 series, has been adapted with a single cab to enable efficient push-pull operation on Italy's scenic long-haul routes.

Image two - FS Trenitalia Regionale 22924 '5 Terre Express' to Levanto arrives at Monterosso, carried by a sleek 'Rock' train set. This popular tourist route shuttles travelers from La Spezia to Levanto, stopping at all five picturesque Cinque Terre towns along the way. The modern 'Rock' trains, delivered in 2019 by Hitachi Rail Italy, are designed to handle high passenger volumes, making them ideal for the bustling 5 Terre Express service.

Image three - FS Trenitalia Intercity 510 from Salerno to Turin arrives at Monterosso station, proudly displaying the Giorno (Daytime) intercity scheme. Having already journeyed over 8 hours from Salerno, it still has roughly 3 hours remaining to reach its final destination in Turin. This long-haul service provides a comfortable and scenic route across Italy, linking the southern and northern regions in classic intercity style.

Image four - FS Trenitalia Intercity 510 from Salerno to Turin makes a stop at Monterosso, led by the powerful E401 012 locomotive. Originally built by Ansaldo in the 1990s as E402A models, these locomotives were later rebuilt by Trenitalia with a single cab for dedicated push-pull operations, allowing for more streamlined service on intercity routes. With a formidable 6,000 horsepower, these locomotives can reach a top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph). After nearly three decades of service, their modernized design continues to serve Italian rail passengers with reliability and style.

Image five - FS Trenitalia Intercity 674 from Livorno to Milan approaches the platform, led by a streamlined E414 locomotive. Originally built for high-speed services, the E414 series have been adapted for Intercity routes. The Livorno-Milan route sees multiple Intercity services daily, providing essential connections between Tuscany and Lombardy.

Image six - FS Trenitalia Intercity 665 from Milan to La Spezia disappears into the southern tunnel at Monterosso, with its trailing unit sporting a vibrant wrap for Inside Out 2. The colorful design brings beloved characters like Joy, Sadness, and others from Pixar’s animated world to life on the Italian rails.

A fine set of images - thanks. So much that is interesting to see on the FS. Both I and a friend thoroughly enjoyed our Italian trainwatching during a recent trip.

Did you see/photograph any freights on the line. During the short amount of time we spent on the platform at Monterossa in early September we saw several freights. Unfortunately my immediate reaction was how much the slower freight trains would impact the schedules of the local Cinque Terre trains:-(
