Freight in Monterosso Italy
Author: erielackawanna

During the three days I was in Monterosso, I saw a lot of freight trains pass while I was away from the tracks. On day two, September 17, I did finally shoot two in the station.

Image one - An FS Mercitalia freight train, led by E652 'Tigre' No. 105, heads east through Monterosso with a cut of open gondolas (or are these considered hoppers in Italy).

Image two - A Medway Italia intermodal train, led by a leased Akiem BR186 TRAXX MS2e locomotive, heads west through Monterosso al Mare, Italy. The BR186, from Bombardier's TRAXX MS2e platform, is designed for interoperability across European rail networks. Medway Italia, part of the MSC Group, operates freight services connecting major Italian ports with key logistics hubs. This train is likely en route to Genova.

You know, I didn't ever count cars (I don't usually), but I saw one intermodal as short as three cars. I would guess most of the trains were around 15 to 20 cars. Maybe some of the intermodals were 30? I'm honestly guessing.

Cinque Terre was my favorte place when visiting Italy. We stayed in Vernazza three days but went to Monterosso for dinner by train one evening. Travel between villages is either by train or ferry. The tracks are mostly in tunnels in this hilly area but we occasionally saw trains pass through, but mostly passenger trains.

Italy has a lot of lines with maximum train lengths
of 600 meters, sometimes less. That would include the
locomotive.

Here is a link to a chart showing some limitations
length, weight, and clearance. Note it is in Italian
but I think you can figure it out. These are for the
classic lines which freight almost exclusively uses.
