Tauern Tunnel line Part 2 (Austria)
Author: NMlurker

After an hour in Spittal-Millstättersee I took a train back north to Mallnitz-Obervellach, a very scenic location just south of the Tauern Tunnel. It is also the southern terminal for the auto/small truck shuttle service through the tunnel, saving a much longer drive by road. It was also the site of more drama than I care for during my time in Austria. Upon arrival, my train did not depart and a freight rolled to a stop to the south. Eventually there was an announcement (in German and in English) that there was a "technical problem" on the line and it was shutdown, first until 1 PM and then 1:30 PM. Later, after an hour and a half photographing from the platform (I had lunch during the shutdown), a very gruff train manager from the shuttle train told me that I could not photograph here ("is not possible"). In fact, the only prohibition other than full-on trespassing is "no commercial filming." I later confirmed with the station manager that I was fine as long as I stayed behind the yellow lines. But thereafter I just sat at the station and grabbed shots when there was a train versus setting up for a specific shot with a tripod. The problem with this was that when the shuttle train was in town (hourly) it blocked the shot of the through tracks and I missed a freight. I eventually relocated to the center platform to get ready to board my train back to Bischofshofen, and as soon as I packed up my camera, a mixed freight with two Slovenian locomotives rolled through at speed.

1. After a one hour delay, the train that I came in on (EC112) finally departs from Mallnitz-Obervellach behind an ÖBB 1116-class Taurus just after 1 PM. Despite the appearance of six main tracks, only the center two see regular use plus the track nearest the station used primarily by the shuttle train.

2. The first arrival after the shutdown was this southbound ÖBB railjet in push mode at 1:27 PM.

3. The pushing was being done by a non-matching ÖBB 1016-class Taurus. The 1016, 1116, and 1216 classes are all members of the Siemens-built ES64 models: Euro-Sprinter, 6400 kW, which I am led to believe is nearly 8600 hp.

4. The shuttle train arriving behind a vintage 1144-class locomotive. The first car is the bicycle car, then the drive-on-from-the-side car, and then the covered vehicle racks. On the north end is another drive-off car and a control cab car in which the bicycle riders ride. Pretty sure the vehicle drivers stay in their vehicles.

5. This is the loaded iron ore train from Slovenia for Austrian steel company Voestalpine behind two ÖBB locomotives, an 1116-class Taurus and 1293-class Vectron.

6. A mixed freight of mostly the closest thing to boxcars behind a Rail Traction Company Vectron and lessor Beacon EuroSprinter (ES64). I had to check that these weren't the same pair that I had seen the day before in Brennero, they were not.

7. A railjet arrives with a matching ÖBB 1116-class Taurus in pull-mode.

8. Not sure if this maintenance-of-way equipment was involved in the technical problem.

9. In lovely sunshine the shuttle train arrives and shortly thereafter I am kicked off from my spot. This time the train came down the outer track whereas before it crossed over.

10. A southbound trailer train of mostly Mars Logistics trailers in greenish 'CFL' wells passes behind a 6193-class Railpool Vectron and a 193-class ECCO Rail Vectron leased from French company Akiem. ECCO Rail is a German logistics company. The raised portion of the platform at the left is where the vehicles drive off of the shuttle train.

11. A mixed ÖBB freight follows just six minutes later behind an 1116-class Taurus and an 1144-class.

12. The final train photographed in Mallnitz-Obervellach was a northbound mixed freight passing the center platform with a 1016-class Taurus and 1144-class. I evidently kept my camera out after missing the freight with Slovenian locomotives.

I realize the first part is a typo, but the class is
actually 1144.0  as the first locomotive was
1144 001. There were originally 119 in this
class, but there were only 67 in service at the
start of this year with most of the rest in
storage as the class is being replaced with
more Vectrons which are on order.
