Depends on the run. Engineer usualy makes about $20 more unless its a weekend and then they get weekend extra $45 where I work. We have a few jobs that pay equal base pay for the En and Co.

And RR makes a difference. SF is a higher rate than BN. I have seen 5-25 in difference.

Many variables, including company, date hired, type of service, existing local agreements, arbitraries (if any), etc... I retired in engine service but my highest earning half ever occurred while on a switchman's extra board, turning and burning with double backs and holidays. All things being equal where national agreements apply, engineers come out ahead; and remember (as more than one old head reminded me and which you may want to seriously consider if railroad work in your namesake state is what you have in mind), it's always Florida in that cab (as long as the heater is working and you have a roll of duct tape to seal up the air leaks).

On former BN property, the engineers make more but the pre 1985 conductors get a productivity check for up to a 3rd of their yearly wages.

Way back when, it was in the engineers agreement that they would be the highest paid man on the crew. Then we started the "Give Backs" in the early 70s and that took care of that. We lost the hour of picking up or setting out units, etc. Too many to list here.

True... I tell my crew members that I am paid more to put up with you two than you are paid to put up with me !!!

True, but of course we don't listen to you guys anyway.......lol.

I believe engineers get more pay per trip depending on the number of locomotives they are running. I believe if you have 6 or more locomotives you get some extra money for that trip. I remember we once had 9 locomotives on our train and our engineer was saying he was going to have a nice paycheck next week. At least that was the way it was with the UP.

It was but is not anymore, at least on the trip rated pools. Still helps you out on a local or yard job though.
