Couple things Allen: Out of Oakland on2-20. That OALAT was the 2/BALAT 20. Could have been combined with the OALAT for those empties.
1 BALAT20 and 3 BALAT20 were Sealand trains

2-27 Arriving in Oakland and this matches the TOPS report, the 8958W was the LABRF. It got around the LABAT at SLO or WJ

Any case, slow trips betwen Oakland and SLO 12-14 hours.

OK, corrected. That's what I get for typing this up at 1am!

You have anything on that 9007 East on 2/27? I can't read the scribble very well: is this the 02-BALAT?

I'm thinking the slow running times, especially on the north end, were weather related.

Thanks Wes.

Wes: Two more things. I noticed the AVBAT disappeared late in the month (going via Bakersfield?). Then on 2/27 the symbol LABAF surfaces (at least according to Arnson's handwriting).

No BALAT after 8a on 2-27. The next one departed on 2-28 at 1a as the 8953E

No "F" even on TOPS report. AVBAT could be combined with ESBAT which went via the Valley.

Thanks. Finally found one where I was the hoghead.

I was on space #166 and had Chuck Johnson as my Fireman to LA. We were on duty in SLO on the 25th at 2:30 PM with the 8390-7305-8969-8552.
We tied up in LA at 2:10 with 1'50" ID & 2'00" TD. Paid 222 miles and made $241.74.

Coming home, I was on duty in LA on the 27th at 1:15 AM with Fireman Jerry Keyser. We had the 8862-8973-9153. We tied up in SLO at 9:15 AM with 50" ID, 35" TD and 7'05" HAHT. Paid 222 miles and $290.75.

Thanks again,

Nudge

What are the chances this is Chuck Johnson filling a engineers vacancy on this train?

9285 West (LABRF - rerouted to the Coast) crew on duty LATC 12:15am, departed for SLO at 2:43am
Conductor Tangen
Engineer Johnson
53 loads, 1 empty, 3193 tons, 4138 feet

Yes, the register shows 2:30pm on duty for the BALAT, arrived 12:00am (2/26), off duty time 2:10am. Train had zero loads, 85 empties, 2921 tons, 8100 feet. Conductor was Thompson.

Rosa and Armstad were on the next eb out of SLO (OALAT), 8727 East.

I think Chuck was promoted back then, so its very possible.
