I've been hanging around for 60 years!
Author: aronco

Hi! I'm a marker lamp. I've been hanging around the railroad for over 70 years. I first got started on the old Pennsy. Now there was a classy railroad! What a glorious time! Why. I brought up the rear end of some really fine trains in my youth, like the Broadway Limited, and those St. Louis trains - always did like those trips ending up crossing the big river at St. Louis. Well, as I grew older, they replaced my kind with those fancy new-fangled new electric markers, and I didn't make so many trips then. Finally, I got lucky and moved to California, where I have a part-time job decorating the rear of one of LA Rail's five car fleet of private railroad cars, TIOGA PASS. Why, I get to go all kinds of places. Yesterday, I went from Santa Barbara to San Diego, right along the Coast, then we deadheaded back to LA on a Surfliner train. I even got a chance for real good look at the beach along San Clemente. The temperature was perfect, the tide was in, and the bikinis were everywhere. I hear we're going to San Diego again Saturday. Sure would like to shed some light on the beach girls!

Would the FRA even allow a kerosene buring lamp these days?

Why wouldn't they? Kerosene is not a flammable liquid, but rather falls into the same hazard class as diesel fuel (flash points between 73 and 200 degrees F) and thus may be stored/used on board passenger equipment outside of the passenger compartments.

I thought I had a better picture of one of these markers, but here's the top of one framing some PHL.

These markers are esthetic, electric, and not kerosene, but they wouldn't qualify anyway - FRA requires "sealed beams" for markers.
