MRL 1997 Livingston
Author: cascadehogger

While hogger training in 1997 on the MRL, we were stopped over the Hump Switch waiting for our helper to come off Bozeman Pass and tack onto our rear.   I stepped out and grabbed a shot of our train. I stayed marked up with the same two guys for about four months before jumping on another turn for a while.  Learned a lot.

Hump switch at Livingston, or Bozeman(does one even exist) or at the top of the pass?

Hump Switch is the controlled crossover in Livingston. I was westbound in the pic.

The ex SFE hoghead Tombstone at Amtrak said those 7400s were his favorite mules, quiet and had the old style control stand.  They had not arrived before I went over to NRPC.

We had a wide vareity of power coming across the MRL in the 90s, especially after the BN/Santa Fe merger.  Had this unit while I was hogger training, it was only a month old at the time.

He'd be the first one that I ever heard of that actually admitted to liking them. They had a very jerky lateral motion at high speed that would make you think you were bobble-head doll. Makes my neck hurt just looking at the photo.
