Dr. Lamb Visiting Temple, TX July 18th
Author: Eagle22

The South Central States Chapter of the Railroad and Locomotive Historical Society invites all train enthusiasts, photographers and the general public to its July 18th program at 2 pm on the 3rd Floor of the Temple Library, located at 100 West Adams Avenue.  Photographers, Dr. J. Parker Lamb and William Schaffer will be showing a variety of  digital photos of trains, locomotives , and depots in both Texas and the Midwest.
Dr. Lamb began his fascination of both trains and still photography in 1949 while in high school. He began taking stills of steam engines pulling freight and passenger trains in the South, and continued documenting the railroad’s efforts to transition from steam to diesel while an Air Force officer and during his time in college. Texas became his home when he came to UT, Austin.  He began his forty-two year career in 1959 as professor, consultant, and academic administrator for the Department of Engineering.  His talk will include his visits to Central Texas railroads including the Santa Fe, Missouri Pacific, Katy, Southern Pacific, and various short-lines. Lamb’s unique ability of not only capturing the actual train but often the railroad employees and surrounding scenery has granted him the respect of authors and publishers.  His work has appeared in of over 50 railroad books.  Dr. Lamb has authored six books in a time period ranging between 1991 and 2007 listed as follows:
Katy Diesels to the Gulf, 1991
Classic Diesels of the South,1997
Steel Wheels Rolling, 2001
Perfecting the American Steam Locomotive, 2003
Evolution of the American Diesel Locomotive, 2007
Mr. William Schaffer grew up in the St. Louis area and also has a passion for railroads and photography in the Midwest. He took his first ride on Wabash Railroad’s “Blue Bird” passenger train between Chicago and St. Louis. He purchased his first Kodak camera, after that train ride, which set a precedent to his railroad photography which continued into college. He broadened his skills in photography even further while in college,  earning him the job of photographer for the university.  His program will tour the routes of the Wabash and Norfolk and Western Railroads in the greater St. Louis-Chicago vicinity through his camera lens. Mr. Schaffer is currently retired from Amtrak after 30 years of service.
