Permit to ride
Author: Copy19

After I retired I came across this forgotten laminated card.  As it turned out I never used it.  Whenever I needed to ride a freight for a media project I usuallly wrote a letter to the VPO's office to set it up well in advance.  When I needed to make more spontaneous transportation plans I called or met with my friendly local road foreman, trainmaster or superintendent. I never sprung this on an unsuspecting crew.

What I'm wondering is if other roads had similar permits.

The Santa Fe issued those also.  Mine should be somewhere up in the attic.

There was no expiration date.  I was supposed to return the card upon leaving the company or my retirement.

John I still have my old CNW, Erie Lackawanna, New Jersey Transit, Soo Line ,Western Pacific and Mopac and UP train ride passes. I am still working for UP  for about 14 more months and they no longer issue these to you just your employee photo ID badge.  Wonder if I go back to New Jersey if my pass is still good on NJT it has no expiration date. I need to get pictures of all of them out of the scrap book my wife has made for our many railroad adventures (moves) over the past 44 years.

have a great and a safe week

Who were the other 1250 people that had a card?  Railfans would have wet dreams over holding a card like that.

They might have something else if they just barely missed a gasoline truck at a crossing.

Thanks for sharing that, John!

Perhaps you should present that for a cab ride when they get the Big Boy out on the line.

When visiting Knott's Berry Farm in my youth, cab rides had to be authorized by Walter himself. I got handwritten authority from the gentleman and got my little steam ride around the Farm, but neglected to retain the note for my archives.  A proud item tho, in my memory at least.
