Grand Central Station in Chicago 58 years ago
Author: rhburn3

I have just arrived from my home in Elmhurst, IL. Instead of taking the CNW, I rode the Leyden Lines bus to Lathrop Avenue in River Forest. I then walked south to Madison Street and took Soo Line Train 18, "Laker" to Grand Central Station in Chicago on Harrison Street. The Soo Line fare was 32 cents while I could have ridden the CTA now Blue Line for 25 cents. Train 18 had sleeping cars, a diner lounge, and coaches from both St. Paul and Duluth.

I think the B&O train is train 9 from Washington, DC.

Great story! I know that Madison St. is where the Soo Line trackage ends and then becomes B&OCT---however I never knew there was a Soo station at this location! Thanks for the info........

This depot was too much of a classic to have been razed. It had beauty.
THANKS for sharing this great photo and the story of your trip.

The destruction of this station was a great tragedy. It was designed by the noted architect Solon Beman, who also designed some of the buildings in Pullman.
