How did EL get freight to New England after 1974
Author: twropr

I saw a post that spoke of EL trains detouring over the Utica Branch, presumably between Binghamton and the PC at Utica.  Apparently this happened after the 1974 Poughkeepsie bridge fire.  How did the EL trains get from Utica to the former New Haven?

PC Utica - Selkirk - Springfield - New Haven Cedar Hill Yard
Basically the train was interchanged to PC at Utica instead of Maybrook.
Pool power tended to run between Selkirk and Gang Mills, initially on an alternating basis but towards the last 6 months PC run through power became rare.

PC ran trains  CH3 and CH4 between Selkirk and Cedar Hill yard at New Haven which used the Hudson Line to Beacon, the Beacon Branch to Hopewell Jct. where it connected with the Maybrook line to Connecticut. I thought that train carried the EL's cars on that train.

Hmmm, perhaps you are indeed correct.
Someday I'll have to dig out some of the wheel reports of NE-74 and check. I do know there where many Springfield destinations.
Maybe the NE74 was split at Selkirk and reclassifed to other trains. Many of the cars interchanged at Utica were bound for Cedar Hill.
